RenacPower and his UK partner have created the UK’s most advanced Virtual Power Plant (VPP) by installing a network of 100 ESSs in a cloud platform. The network of decentralized ESSs are aggregated in a cloud platform to deliver Dynamic Firm Frequency Response (FFR) services such as using approved assets to quickly reduce demand or increase generation to help balance the grid and avoid power outages.
Through participating the FFR service tender process, the home owners can get more earnings, so as to maximize the value of solar & batteries for homes and minimize the home energy costs.
The ESS consists of hybrid inverter, lithium-ion battery and EMS, the FFR remote control function is integrated inside the EMS, which is shown as the following diagram.
According to the grid frequency’s deviation, the EMS will control the ESS to be worked under Self use mode, feed in mode and consume mode, which adjust the power flow of the solar energy, home load and charging and discharging of battery.
The whole VPP system scheme is shown as bellow, 100 residential 7.2kwh ESSs are aggregated via Ethernet and Switch Hub to be as one 720kwh VPP plant, connected into grid to provide the FRR service.
One Renac ESS is consisted of one 5KW N1 HL series hybrid inverter working together with one 7.2Kwh PowerCase Battery, which is shown as the figure. N1 HL Series hybrid inverter integrated EMS can support multiple operation modes including self-use, force time use, backup, FFR, remote control, EPS etc., and is suitable for various application scenarios.
The mentioned hybrid inverter is applicable with both on-grid and off-grid PV systems. It controls the flow of energy intelligently. End users can choose to charge batteries with free, clean solar electricity or grid electricity and discharge stored electricity when it is needed with flexible operation mode choices.
